Author(s)John Craig

KeywordsLife expectancy tables.
AnnotationLife expectancies are averages. Among the group of people to which the average refers, there will be wide variations in the length of their lives. This article quantifies these variations by looking at the chances of death at different ages, the chances of an early death, the chances of living for an unusually long time, or reaching particular ages. It also demonstrates how life tables can be used, to calculate the chances of combination of death or survival of couples. This article also appears in Statistical News, issue 119, Spring 1998. (RH).
