AnnotationThis report provides information about the structure and work of local authority social services department (SSD) registration and inspection units in England. The units register and inspect a range of social services provided by the private and voluntary sectors, including residential care for older people, and people with disabilities and learning disabilities, children's homes, boarding schools, and day care services for young children. The report covers the following: workload and performance of the units; staffing; lay assessors; inspection reports and follow up action; advisory panels; and costs. Data was gathered from questionnaires completed by unit heads of 105 registration and inspection units (out of a total of 113) during the period 1 April 1996 to 31 March 1997. (AKM).
