Annotation | Foot disorders are common in older people following stroke. In this Australian study, podiatric problems were sought in 88 of 90 patients consecutively admitted to a stroke rehabilitation unit to determine their prevalence and nature and the ability of a podiatry service to alleviate them. In all, 65% had one or more podiatric problems. Although most problems detected were simple and easily treatable, they still had the potential to adversely affect the stroke rehabilitation programme. The authors argue that a podiatric assessment is essential for all patients undergoing stroke rehabilitation and may also be valuable in other rehabilitation settings. (AKM). |
