AnnotationPeople aged over 65 constitute a growing proportion of the world's population both in western and in developing countries. Their quality of life is negatively affected by a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, as is their life expectancy. Physical activity can reduce the the burden of cardiovascular diseases; and its benefits have been demonstrated in both healthy and chronically ill older people, while the risks have been found to be modest. Physicians should recommend moderate-intensity physical activity to sedentary older people, who are still the majority within the elderly population. This article reviews research findings on the effects of physical activity on: lipid abnormalities; body fat distribution; arterial hypertension; diabetes mellitus; coronary heart disease; cardiac rehabilitation; heart failure; peripheral heart disease; and stroke. Further research concerning the cardiovascular effects of physical activity in the old-old and oldest-old is needed, given the paucity of data available. (RH).
