Annotation | This article presents the thinking behind the "Eden alternative", a concept conceived by William Thomas, a rural physician, as the dominant organising principle for long-term care. The Eden alternative in nursing home care focuses on: care, as opposed to treatment; combatting loneliness, helplessness and boredom in the residents; and exposing residents to pets, plants, gardens, and children.
