AnnotationThe pattern of usage of medical/health services (e.g. geriatric day hospitals, community nursing services) and community support services (e.g. home help services, day care centres) was ascertained for those aged 65 and over living on public housing estates in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. In the preceding 6 months, these community-dwelling older people had a higher rate of medical/health service use than community support services. Using the standard cost of each service supplied, the average cost for those who used both types of service was higher than for those who used one type of service only. Using ADLs and self-rated health to indicate respondents' level of health, non-linear relationships were observed between their health and the average cost of care services. The number and nature of diseases reported, other than cultural explanations and the individuals' help-seeking behaviour, may explain this `unconventional' behaviour. Affordable and accessible formal care enables many older people to live independently in the community. Preventive intervention may enhance older people's well-being, rendering them less dependent on expensive medical or health care. (RH).
