AnnotationThis US study presents behavioural outcomes at 1-year follow-up from a preventive services intervention trial with Medicare beneficiaries. The health promotion package consisted of goal setting and counselling based on a health risk appraisal and a series of eight educational sessions. All subjects completed a health risk appraisal questionnaire immediately before the the intervention and one year later; this served as the dependent measure. Intervention group subjects were set the following goals: increase physical activity; increase cruciferous vegetable intake; reduce blood pressure; maintain current habits; reduce dietary fats; improve nutrition pattern (e.g. variety); improve meal regularity; decrease sodium; decrease caffeine; improve home safety; increase fibre; and improve motor vehicle safety. Results indicated that there were significant, positive changes in intervention subjects in activity level and selected nutrition behaviours relative to control subjects. The strengths and weaknesses of a broad-based approach to intervention are discussed. (RH).
