AnnotationThird Age is defined as age range 50-69. This paper reviews explanations of recent British trends in Third Age male activity rates. These explanations provide a basis for discussion of regional trends and differences in Third Age male activity rates in Britain between 1971 and 1991. The analysis concentrates on the labour market adjustment processes for Third Age males, rather than the underlying causes of labour market imbalances. Evidence is presented for considerable differences in Third Age male activity rates at regional level. Based on the results of a postal survey they conducted, the authors raise concerns about lack of research by TECs (training and enterprise councils) into the training needs of older workers: three-quarters of respondents reported that they had not been involved in nor had they commissioned research on this issue.
