AnnotationThe aim of this Australian study was to provide an insight for primary health workers into the nature of retirement for non-professional men. The qualitative methodology of phenomenology was used to explore the recent retirement experiences of 10 retired men, and the effect of retirement on their social relationships. Information was gathered through self-reflective journals and in-depth interviews. Four major themes were revealed which positively impacted on the men's social health. Retirement was perceived as an anticipated life stage; a time for freedom; a time of activity; and a time to consolidate primary relationships. (AKM).
