Annotation | The Access Unit was established in 1995 to provide a single point of entry to programmes and services provided by the North West Hospital in Victoria, the largest specialist aged care facility in Australia. All telephone enquiries are answered by health professionals who are able to provide an immediate clinical response. Each referral is forwarded to an appropriate service, whether provided by the hospital or elsewhere. The establishment of the Access Unit has improved clinical management, and has also identified a number of deficiencies in the hospital's protocols which have now been addressed. Following the successful implementation of this model in the sub-acute sector there are plans to investigate the feasibility of expanding it to the acute hospital sector. (AKM). |
