AnnotationThe conference considered factors affecting the planning and management of palliative care services with particular reference to those services in the community. It also considered how new strategies and alliances can be developed between statutory and voluntary bodies; and looked at the assessment of need for services and the particular roles of people involved in those teams. The conference endorsed the following action points: assessment of the educational needs of a locality with regard to the palliative care approach; establishing partnerships between NHS providers and commissioners, voluntary agencies, GPs, primary health teams, and social services departments (SSDs); and agreement of service plans for setting target dates for completion of palliative care strategies. Other issues discussed included: seamless working and partnerships between service providers; developments in evidence-based clinical strategies; and implementation of `A policy framework for commissioning cancer services': report by the Expert Advisory Group on Cancer to the Chief Medical Officers of England and Wales.
