AnnotationThis research based on a survey of the needs of refugee elders mainly in Sheffield and also in Yorkshire and Humberside, was funded by Charity Projects. It examines the role of volunteers in giving support, the position of ethnic minority elders in the UK, and the position of exiled elders in the Vietnamese, Somali and Yemeni communities in Sheffield. Their vulnerability in terms of mental health problems and treatment is discussed. The lack of services severely affects all refugee communities settled in Yorkshire and Humberside. Ethnic minority elders are without political power, and are unlikely to take a greater role in pressing for improved services. The survey's findings show that it is not acceptable to elders for the continuing gaps in provision to be filled by volunteers, whose work in the early stages of resettlement is acknowledged for the practical help offered.
