Annotation | The aim of this book is to promote the development of residential care (including nursing homes) through better management. In part one, five fictional accounts of different managers and management styles are presented, and these are used and further developed in subsequent chapters. Part two focuses on the content, organisation and management of residential care, and introduces the concept of residential care as a "therapeutic social ecology". In part three, the practicalities of managing residential care are addressed, covering the following: responding to residents' needs; managing risks; resident participation; staffing; the building and environment; residents' money, budgets and finance. In the final part, the political and economic environment of residential care is examined, including the role of inspection units and policy makers. The concluding chapter outlines a number of requirements for better management of residential care. (AKM). |
