AnnotationDuring the past few decades, the possibilities of living openly in non-heterosexual (lesbian or gay) lifestyles have been transformed, brought about by social and cultural change. The authors' research at South Bank University has investigated the structure and meanings of these emerging forms of intimate involvement, insofar as they can be considered to be family-like relationships. The research involved in-depth interviews with 48 men and 48 women; 20 couples were also interviewed. Attempts were made to cover 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and over 60s age groups; the last group was the most difficult to find. This summary examines the `family of choice' concept; couple relationships; care, responsibility and commitment; and rights and citizenship. (RH).
