Annotation | At national and European levels, there is growing recognition of the need to develop labour market strategies for the `third age', and evidence that economic restructuring, down-sizing and de-layering has had greatest impact on the 50-65 age group, who are most vulnerable to redundancy and find re-employment most difficult. This report presents an evaluation of the Barnsley element of the Fenix project, an EU (European Union) funded transnational development programme which `tackles inequality in employment experienced by excluded groups in society'. Its approach is based on the concept of an integrated recruitment, guidance and counselling service. The report considers the local labour market context, evaluation of course content and delivery, the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques for `sustaining a positive mental attitude', perceptions of ability to find work, and the impact of FENIX on the labour market and levels of employment. Whilst the FENIX was well-received by most respondents, the survey revealed areas for scope in enhancing the experience on follow-up work and referrals. (RH). |
