AnnotationA sample of 322 British women aged 20 years and over, representing a cross-section of ages and geographical provenance, were interviewed in a street survey of attitudes to ageing and perceived methods of coping with ageing change. Generally, and in contrast to some earlier studies, a uniformity of opinion was found across age groups, with exceptions usually indicating the preoccupations of a particular age cohort rather than intrinsic differences in attitudes to ageing itself. Furthermore, the attitudes to ageing were pragmatic rather than pessimistic, with most respondents seeing positive as well as negative aspects to the ageing process. Respondents saw a need for therapeutic programmes to stave off the worst effects of ageing, but by implication were less certain of their success. The implications of these findings for educational gerontology are discussed. (AKM).
