AnnotationThis article examines the new politics of old age in the European Union (EU). Its main focus is the changing nature of the political participation and representation of older people - from acquiescence to dissent - particularly at grassroots level. But there is also a new politics at macro levels as European governments attempt to reduce the public expenditure associated with population ageing. While there is no doubt about the growth of activism among Europe's pensioners there are still major economic, social and personal barriers to participation and these are discussed in the concluding section of the first part of the article. The second part considers the future politics of old age and concludes that political mobilisation among older people will increase and that local authorities will play a key role in that process.
