AnnotationThe idea for the Older People's Initiative (OPI) came in the wake of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990. GMCVO (Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation) aimed to emphasise the importance of decent and suitable housing for the success of care in the community, and to engage older people in voicing their needs to authorities and providers in their area. This report covers the research and action phases, comprising: arranging meetings in Manchester, Trafford, Stockport and Bolton; a community drama project; and a county-wide seminar. Observations are also made on links with older people from ethnic groups. The report concludes that older people's housing choices in local areas would be improved with more local consultation and opening lines of communication with service providers. (RH).
