AnnotationOlder people's lives are being constricted by lack of safe, accessible, reliable and affordable transport (referred to as SARA). Help the Aged has set up a Transport Council, with members drawn from older people's organisations, bus and train companies, users, planners, academics and professionals. This report reflects the views of older people, the importance which they attach to mobility, and the attributes of transport deemed essential for their quality of life. It emphasises the importance of involving older people in the planning and development process, stresses the value of partnerships between service providers, and the significant need for better information. Thirty-two recommendations are made, that all transport systems must accommodate older people's need for a safe, accessible, reliable and affordable service. These are aimed at transport operators, local government (for planning, licensing bus routes, supporting community initiatives, subsidising concessionary schemes), regional government as it emerges, regulators and the Department of the Environment, Transport and Regions (DETR) itself.
