AnnotationThe Department for Education and Employment commissioned the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), in partnership with the National Council for Educational Technology (NCET) to undertake this study. Its aim was to investigate approaches to raising awareness of information technology (IT) and confidence in its use among the general public, especially economically or socially excluded or disadvantaged groups. Thirteen pilot sites, representing a broad cross-section of organisations - including colleges, adult education providers, training centres, telecottages, libraries, community centres, TECs and commercial companies - were supported to develop and evaluate different approaches. Some pilots formed partnerships which involved local community organisations and groups in their work. The report makes recommendations about transferable skills, staff development, sources of funding, and good practice. (RH).
