AnnotationThis report was commissioned by the Housing for Older People in Europe (HOPE) Network, and funded by the Housing Corporation of England as part of their review into housing for older people. It aims to obtain an understanding of the concept of independent living for older people based on the perceptions of housing providers, who in turn need to adopt accessible and adaptable standards. The report draws on examples from specific schemes of Dutch, German and British housing associations and co-operatives: Frie Scholle, and Berliner Bau-und Wohnungensossenschaft Von 1892 eG in Germany; Woonzorg Nederlands, and de Woonplaats Woningcorporatie in the Netherlands; and Anchor Trust, and the North British Association in the UK. It concludes with observations on the physical and social aspects of independent living, and on the characteristics of organisations that are successfully providing homes for independent living.
