AnnotationThis a report of an inspection of services for people with learning disabilities in eight local authorities, which assesses social services departments (SSDs) against a set of standards and criteria. Whilst good examples of community care services were found, many SSDs acknowledged shortfalls in living accommodation, day services and respite care. There were calls for more specialist domiciliary services; and users, carers and staff frequently voiced dissatisfaction with transport to and from day services. A chapter on `Improving services' includes checklists for managers to use in evaluating their services. Other chapters focus on particular topics: services; assessment, care planning and care management; information, communication and consultation; service objectives and planning; equal opportunities; and management arrangements. A summary of the report is also available, which identifies the key issues for front line staff and their managers. (RH).
