Annotation | Behavioural problems are common in dementia, and they, rather than cognitive impairment, are often the reason for long-term care. The author outlines a systematic approach that will provide a more rational basis for management, which involves: defining the problem; excluding or treating delirium; excluding or treating any underlying psychiatric symptoms or syndromes; assessing the role of carers and the environment in causing or perpetuating symptoms.
