Annotation | Senile squalor syndrome - defined as gross self-neglect, social isolation and extreme squalor in an older person - was first described in the literature in 1975 as Diogenes syndrome. It appears to be uncommon, but the syndrome may be missed because the state of neglect is attributed to concurrent medical, psychiatric or social problems. Decisions on management need to be tailored to each individual; and GPs also have an important role in following up. The author explains why a failure to recognise the syndrome may have disastrous consequences for the patient. (RH). |
