Priorities
 — older patients and rationing of healthcare

KeywordsHealth services ; Grant allocation.
AnnotationGiven that resources are finite and demand is infinite, there is mounting pressure to prioritise or ration health services. Targeting has been suggested in order to provide health care with definite objectives and measurable outcomes. However, targeting does not fit the facts of presentation and treatment of older people's health problems. The authors explain why targeting, rationing and prioritisation is unworkable and could lead to deterioration in the health care of older people. (RH).
