AnnotationDemographic and social trends are increasing the need for families to look after their own. Australia is no exception, where an ageing population means that costs of health care, institutional care of the elderly, and income support are certain to rise. This article uses data from the Survey of Australian Families (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1992) to determine the level of interhousehold transfers between adults and their parents. The extent of intergenerational transfers, variations across the life course, gender differences in patterns of care giving or receiving, socio-economic differences, and ethnicity are examined. The authors conclude that various forms of inequity are likely to increase: divorce, changing demographic trends and migration all affect the availability of intergenerational support. Provision must be made for those who do not have families in a position to provide reasonable support. (RH).
