AnnotationThis report is based on a review commissioned in September 1997 by the Department of Health (DoH) as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review on Equity of Access to Health Services. It reviews recent research evidence on inequities in access to health care in England, factors which lead to inequity, and where, possible, examines successful interventions and strategies. A methodological framework, based on need and utilisation, is outlined. The remainder of the report examines various aspects of NHS care in the light of this framework: general practitioner (GP) consultations; acute hospital care; mental illness; preventative medicine and health promotion; and long term health care. Recommendations are made on methodologies for future research into inequities in health. (RH).
