Annotation | It is widely recognised that physical abuse of persons with severe developmental disabilities is prevalent, usually perpetrated by a residential care worker, and is rarely reported. However, no solid research on this topic has been reported. This article notes the lack of information about protective services directed to the developmentally disabled population and lack of coordination between agencies serving people with developmental disabilities and those providing protective services, in the United States (US). The signs and symptoms of abuse in people with learning disabilities, the alternative communication strategies required and the special skills needed for case assessment are presented. The author concludes with a series of federal, state, and community level policy recommendations. (AKM). |
