AnnotationEmpirical evidence from four studies of older homeless people is reviewed and gaps in current knowledge identified. These include: a study of 281 older homeless men living in the streets and in shelters in the Bowery, New York (the skid row area); a review of case files of 157 older people in Chicago who were referred for emergency shelter services; a study of 85 homeless men and women who were sleeping on the streets and living in temporary accommodation in Detroit; and a study of 130 older homeless people who were sleeping on the streets in Central London. Awareness of the extent of the problem is considered, before examining the circumstances and reasons for homelessness. Longitudinal studies and intensive case histories are necessary to collect evidence of events and behaviours which contribute to periods of stability and periods of homelessness. A greater understanding of the sociological and psychological needs of homeless people is likely to help in the provision of effective welfare services and support systems. (RH).
