Annotation | The medical literature on medical fitness to drive is relatively recent, and has two main themes: a relative unawareness among doctors and the rehabilitation disciplines of the functional and medical importance of fitness to drive; and an overemphasis on selecting those who should not drive rather than enabling older drivers. The author discusses the pros and cons of enabling versus policing; models of driving behaviour; assessment and screening; and age-related diseases and risk assessment. (RH). |
