Annotation | Influenza (flu) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people, yet in a number of European countries such as the United Kingdom (UK) and The Netherlands, health authorities do not recommend to vaccinate all older persons above a certain age, and vaccination is offered only to those with conventional risk factors, such as cardiac and pulmonary disease. In this article, the authors argue that there is now convincing evidence that age itself leads to increased vulnerability and therefore is a risk factor for influenza and its complications. Consequently, it no longer seems justified not to vaccinate all older people, including the healthy, against influenza. (AKM). |
