AnnotationIn this real-time investigation of reactions to a noxious and threatening environmental stimulus the distress responses of 164 middle-aged and older Israelis during the bombardment of Scud missiles in the Gulf war were studied. Irrespective of age, the self-assessment of health proved to be the most consistently significant variable in explaining change in both affective and interaction distress outcomes. Notwithstanding the limitations of research designed and administered during a war situation, the findings supported the thesis that subjective, or self-reported health, is a useful barometer of psychological distress, and measure of perceived competence and capacity for dealing with acute environmental press conditions.
