AnnotationHopelessness was examined as both a mediator and a moderator of the effect of life events on depressive symptomatology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) caregivers. Three categories of life events (unpleasant events, pleasant events, and specific unpleasant caregiving events) were used as predictor variables. Specific unpleasant events were not related to hopelessness and therefore could not be considered in mediational analyses. After controlling for hopelessness, pleasant events were no longer significantly related to depression, whereas unpleasant events remained related to depression. This indicated that hopelessness was a dominant mediator of pleasant events and a less potent mediator of unpleasant events. Regression analyses testing moderation indicated a significant interaction between unpleasant events and hopelessness. Caregivers who reported higher hopelessness and higher levels of unpleasant events reported significantly higher levels of depression. These results indicate that hopelessness moderates and mediates unpleasant events, mediates pleasant events, and is neither a moderator nor a mediator of specific events in effects of depression in AD caregivers.
