AnnotationThe study of balance control is important to the overall understanding of movement dysfunction. The Functional Reach (FR) test was developed to provide an assessment tool for balance that was simple, cost effective, and clinically useful for evaluating balance during reaching. This study examines the differences in reaching distance and FR strategies between a group of 25 older clients evaluated in a Balance and Dizziness Disorder Clinic and a group of 25 older clients without balance problems. The two groups did not differ significantly in the distance reached or the strategies used to control balance. Therapists are cautioned to interpret the FR test only for the population on which it was developed, and with the criteria established by the originator. (RH).
