Annotation | Few empirical studies have examined the use and non-use of assistive devices purchased by disabled people living in the community. In this study, a systematic follow-up was conducted, in Israel, of 40 buyers (average age 72.4 years) of an assistive chair with a piston mechanism to aid rising and sitting. The study examined patterns of use of the chair over time; the adjustment of the chair of individual users; and user satisfaction. Data were gathered through telephone interviews. The study found that 38 of the subjects were still using the chair at the time of the interview (on average one year after purchase), and 27 were still using the piston mechanism; however, only six subjects knew how to adjust the piston strength. Thirty-three of the subjects were "very satisfied or satisfied" with the chair. The findings point both to the overall effectiveness of the device, and to problem areas requiring improvement.
