Annotation | The aims of this US study were to determine if throwing activities provide a challenging stimulus for training balance and to examine if there is a differential response in centre of gravity (COG) excursion among different throwing activities. Thirty-one adults aged 55 to 69 years performed four throwing activities while standing on a force plate. COG maximal excursion in anterior/posterior (AP) direction and in a medial/lateral (ML) direction was calculated from centre of pressure (COP) measurements. The study found that all throwing activities demonstrated greater overall AP, and ML COG movement when compared to quiet standing, and concluded that throwing activities may provide a challenging stimulus for training balance in older adults.
