AnnotationThe aim of this outcome study was to determine the effectiveness of interventions that were aimed at improving the functional performance of cognitively impaired patients of a geriatric assessment and rehabilitation centre in Edmonton, Canada. Change in functional performance was measured using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Subjects in the study demonstrated significant levels of improvement between admission and discharge, and the amount of improvement seen did not differ between those who were moderately or severely cognitively impaired. Sixty-six percent of the subjects in the study group were discharged home. Results suggests that the combination of the intensity of time in occupational and physical therapy and other factors, such as medication, practice, or motivation, contributed to the overall outcome of improved functional status for the study group.
