AnnotationThe Home from Hospital initiative was established by the British Red Cross in 1992 with the support of a three year grant from the Department of Health (DoH). Its broad objective was to provide a service to support patients returning home following discharge from general hospitals. In this article, the findings of the evaluation of the initiative are reported, as conducted by the Community Care Division of the Nuffield Institute for Health between autumn 1995 and spring 1996. At the time of the evaluation, there were 17 Home from Hospital schemes in existence, but since, further schemes have become operational. All of the schemes were in England, with all but two in the Shire counties. The researchers were left in little doubt that the initiative offers a highly valued and beneficial service. The full report is available in a publication: "Going home: report of an evaluation of the British Red Cross Home from Hospital Scheme" (1996) by Waddington and Henwood. (KJ).
