Annotation | This US study examines the types of coping strategies used by 51 middle-aged and 49 older women who had a mastectomy, and the relationships between the types of coping strategies used, and the levels of depression they experienced. Although both age groups of women used active-cognitive and active-behavioural coping strategies, more of the older women used avoidance strategies than their middle-aged counterparts. Type of coping strategy used was not associated with depression levels for middle-aged women. For older women, using avoidance strategies and not using cognitive strategies were associated with higher depression scores. (RH). |
