AnnotationCould the benefit of moderate alcohol consumption on cardiovascular and total mortality be counterbalanced by an adverse effect on cognitive functioning, making the user at risk from dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD)? This article reviews two recent papers, which suggest that there is no reason to advise people to quit moderate drinking. However, introducing alcohol consumption to abstainers cannot be recommended, because of the risk of loss of control leading to social and medical problems. (RH).
