AnnotationThis book examines the current financing and provision of long-term care in the United States (US), focusing on recent state and federal legal developments. Chapter one provides an introduction to long-term care in the US, focusing on Medicaid and Medicare provisions. Chapter two and three examine Medicaid's provisions both on a federal and state level, and discusses Medicaid eligibility, focusing on the issue of "spend-down", that is, transfer of assets in order to qualify for Medicaid assistance. Chapter four describes some state disincentives for Medicaid spend-down, such as estate recovery programmes. In chapter six, initiatives taken by individual states to balance needs and costs of long-term care are outlined. The final chapter looks at future possibilities of financing and planning of long-term care in the US, including national health insurance, long-term care insurance, and integrated planning. (AKM).
