Annotation | The authors present information about common mental disorders in long-term care (LTC) and various forms of psychotherapy. They discuss mental health evaluations: how to use the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) to screen for depression and dementia; and how to use the results of assessments to set up effective behavioural interventions. Four chapters focus on intervention: counselling techniques; behavioural assessment and intervention; interventions for specific psychosocial problems such as aggression; and the side effects and uses of psychiatric medications. Later chapters cover administrative documentation, with an overview of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), as well as legal and ethical issues that arise in LTC. The book concludes with a consideration of the psychosocial well-being of staff and how they can prevent burn-out. (RH). |
