AnnotationCompulsive hoarding behaviour, exhibited in later life, can have serious implications. Geriatric care managers and social workers often grapple with issues related to ethics and ageing, including client self-determination, that are raised by hoarding actions. Involuntary intervention may be needed to ensure that the older person is not in imminent danger. Examples are given, which involve: hoarding animals; the need for legal intervention; hoarding as the result of traumatic events; Alzheimer's disease; hoarding of money; and hoarding with tragic results. These are composites of multiple situations, to illustrate behaviour and outcomes. (RH).
