AnnotationThis report sets out the findings of a working party set up by the Residential Forum in 1996 to examine training for staff in residential care homes. The first few chapters review the history of training for residential care workers, and describes the current situation in terms of the number of trained and qualified residential workers, the staff turnover and wastage, and the current training systems available. The attitudes, skills and knowledge required by people working in residential care homes, and the types of qualifying training which can best meet their needs are then examined. The report concludes with a number of recommendations, including: training that meets the requirements of the Scottish/National Vocational Qualifications (S/NVQs) should form the backbone of the future training strategy; residential work is a form of social care which needs to be recognised as an independent discipline; the views of residents and their advocates should be considered when identifying the training needs of residential workers; and the creation of a National Training Organisation specifically for social care workers.
