AnnotationThis article presents a demographic profile of grandparents in the United States (US), using the National Survey of Families and Households. Specific dimensions of grandparenthood addressed include grandparents' survival, the timing of grandparenthood, grandparents' involvement in other roles, surrogate parenting, and stepgrandparents. The data indicate considerable heterogeneity among grandparents of different gender, race and ethnicity, and also suggest modifications in previous descriptions of modern grandparenthood.
