AnnotationImproving care for older people has been hampered by a lack of uniformity in the assessment of patient care needs. An international project, interRAI (resident assessment instrument), has developed a standardised assessment system for use in any hospital or long-term care setting. Its two components are a minimum dataset and resident assessment protocols (also known as MDS/RAI) which, together, guide an assessor through best practice in developing a care plan. The system may be paper-based or entered into a computer database. For the first time, the standardised structure allows the development of knowledge bases on the major domains of importance in caring for older people. Transfer, sharing and comparison of information is now possible between health and social services, and thereby help to solve the many problems in caring for older people. (RH).
