AnnotationReminiscence is often used with older people as a therapeutic tool, but has rarely been used in health promotion work. The author describes his work with two groups active in the Halewood Health Forum (HHF) in Knowsley, Merseyside: the Silver Circle, a self supporting group of older women who meet with the aim of improving their health through diet and exercise; and the St Mary's Day Centre run by a local church working with clients with special needs. With interviewees' consent, conversations were tape recorded. Their memories and experiences of food led to a series of statements on the themes of: childhood and the war; marriage and division of labour; taste; shopping; illness and disease; obesity; loneliness and depression; and health care. Information from the taped sessions and a group session with the Silver Circle formed the core information for a draft nutritional leaflet entitled `A menu for health'. The final version is to be used with health care agencies and community groups throughout Halewood. The qualitative method used for obtaining information is discussed, as are how the results fit in with current guidelines on healthy eating. (RH).
