AnnotationOnly recently has the effect of treatment become as important as diagnosis and management in the field of health care. Research has shown that successful outcomes in health care for older people relate to quality of life, physical independence, and relief for their caregiving families. This book looks at various aspects of outcomes assessment in health care for older people. The first part provides an overview of measurement, assessment and outcomes, describing existing research, the instruments available and the economic context. In the second part, various aspects of measurements are discussed, covering epidemiological methods, measures of handicap, current thinking in health economics, and the use of healthy active life expectancy to measure population outcomes. The final part describes outcomes assessment in disorders that particularly affect older people, including fractured hip, diabetes, stroke, and mental health disorders. It also addresses some issues in long-term care and informal care.
