KeywordsPersonality ; Ageing process.
AnnotationThis article argues that different patterns of ageing can be best understood if the emphasis is shifted from looking at discrete characteristics to an emphasis on the whole individual. In this way ageing becomes the integration of past experience and present events in the framework of a continuous self. It is suggested that different styles of ageing derive from specific personality configurations. Using five personality types, as defined in axis II of DSM-III-R, the article illustrates how older people cope with the constraints of old age, create an ageing identity and respond to life events in ways that fit their personality styles.
