AnnotationThis investigation is based on Danish data from the Nordic Research on Ageing (NORA) study, the aim of which was to highlight easily measured factors relevant to preventing and postponing disability in older people. The 307 survivors aged 80 in 1995, from a survey of 405 75 year olds in 1989, were invited to participate. Five-year mortality was independently related to physical activity, pulmonary activity in men, and muscle strength in women. Dependency at follow-up in men was related to low physical activity at baseline, inability to mount a 50cm step, two or more chronic diseases and, only marginally significant, knee extension strength. In women, only low physical activity was predictive. From baseline to follow-up, 34% of the population had reduced their physical activities. Knee extension strength was reduced in both men and women. In the stair-mounting test, 44% could only attain one or more 10cm steps lower than at baseline. A relationship between declining muscle mass and functional limitations was observed in men and women at the age of 75 as well as at the age of 80. (RH).
